Performing and Visual Arts showcase at Ponsonby and Pasadena Intemediate Schools
Last week we visited both Pasadena and Ponsonby Intermediate Schools for our annual Arts Showcase. Arts Leaders Sienna Davidson, Amy Morrin and Niamh Maher supported the showcase of talent and all who travelled represented the creative arts at our school so well.
There was an exciting line-up of Dance, Drama and Music performance selected for the day, a fantastic reel of Media Film and showcase of Junior Art.
We congratulate those who travelled on their fantastic performance. Special thanks to Victor Saussey for your Media presentation and to both Archie-Lee Cooper and Victor for your help on the day. Finally, thanks to all teachers for your support on the day – Beth Kayes, Chloe Davison, Samantha Wood-Rawnsley and Daniel Barrett. There is excitement in the air as we look ahead to a new term and move into brand new buildings next term. Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday break

Congratulations Freya Kemp for your incredible illustrative design chosen to promote the Arts both on and off-site at Springs. Freya’s work has been widely used both in these ArtsNews additions, on school visits and now in our teams promotional t-shirts. Thank you Freya for your hard–work!
YouDance Festival 2019
Students from Year 12 and 13 Dance had an exciting time at YouDance Festival earlier this month, performing at the Raye Freedman Theatre with 8 other Auckland schools and youth companies. Year 12 students performed their own choreography, created for the achievement standard ‘Choreograph a group dance to communicate an intention.’ Year 13s performed ‘H.O.P.E.’, a dance choreographed by Rutherford teacher Perri Exeter and performed by students from four Auckland schools.

Art Department on the move!
Extended Greetings – At the time of writing we are counting down to the last days of Y block and reflecting on how fast two and a half years has gone. Despite our initial reservations about the impact the quality of the primary designed spaces might have on our subject; the resilience of the students and commitment of the staff worked tirelessly to maintain high standards to produce some of the best grades for the past ten years. Whilst our rooms are currently in a state of flux with the move into boxes – we are also excited to be moving into our three designated spaces in the new school with some of the history and archives from the old school. Along with a set of new classroom tables, we have been fortunate to have had Kit Panting repurpose a number of classroom tables and custom build three large demo tables. Fit for multiple uses in a modern Integrated Learning Environment, they will also predominately feature the three primary colours used in the Visual Arts.
Both Junior and Senior students are working hard to complete work for assessment before the end of this term. The term two Y9 students are busy producing paintings that combine pattern and creatures, the Y10 semester one students are finishing off their Lichtenstein illustrative self-portraits for NCEA Level 1 credits. The Y11 are working on their second internal for the year – creating photograms and paintings that will support their development on the external boards, and Y12 and Y13 students are working on various internals to produce works that are framed and extended by their independent programmes.
The recent EOTC trip proved to be a good opportunity for Y13 students to see a range of Art in context and also evaluate and discuss the Top Art show. Thanks to Kirsty Britton and Danielle Voyce for their guidance and management of the students – both of whom gave high praise to the quality of student behaviour and conduct. This bodes well for the up-coming Semi Permanent next term – which will involve a selection of students participating in the international Art conference.
As part of the Y13 Art Painting programme this year, the 3.5 internal was redesigned as a ‘tape art’ display……
on the walls of the Y7 vestibule (nee cloakroom/toilet area). The works (which are worth 4 Level 3 credits) are an extension of the students own drawings and will be completed in the last week of term. In their last year with their last work in the last week – we hope to have a little ‘celebration/farewell’ to the work and space with chips and juice and lots of photographs.
Lastly, as its half way through the year – a gentle reminder that there are still a number of Art fees that have yet to be paid (outlined below*). Thank you to those families who have paid – your contribution enables us to manage and develop our programmes to meet the needs of the students moving forward into the Creative Communities.
*ART FEES* Y10 – $30, Y11 – $55, Y12Des – $85, Y12Pht – $80, Y12Ptg – $65, Y13Arh – $35, Y13Des – $85, Y13Pht – $120, Y13Ptg – $75
