Library News

The library has been collaborating with the history department to bring literature into the teaching of subjects such as Vietnam and the settlement of New Zealand. In June, Andrew visited three year 12 classes to read excerpts from Tobias Wolff’s wonderful memoir In Pharaoh’s Army, about a soldier who was initially enthusiastic about America’s war but soon became disillusioned. If history can tend to the abstract, then literature allows the reader to access the thoughts, feelings, and direct experience of the individual involved.

Term 3 is on the horizon which means Library Week, interhouse book quiz competition, a visiting author to the school, and our big book giveaway. There is a lot of literary fun to look forward to.

The nation’s favourite literacy initiative. The Hell’s Pizza reading challenge is live for Term 3 and Term 4. Read seven books from the school library and get one free snack size pizza from Hell’s. Visit the library to get started on your pizza wheel.

We subscribes to Wheeler’s E-Platform which contains over 2000 e-books. Students can access books from home through the WSCW library website. https://westernsprings.school.nz/library/

The library is overflowing with new books this term with a focus on contemporary young adult fiction, such as: Thieves Gambit, Into the Mouth of the Wolf, The Door that Led to Where, Infinity Alchemist, and Gracehopper. We’ve also bought sets of YA classics including: The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, Pigman by Paul Zindel, and The Endless Steppe by Esther Hautzig. If your child needs a good book recommendation whether they are reading for pleasure or for an assignment then send them to the library.
