Petra Tang taught at Western Springs College: full-time 2015–2019, casual 2020-2022.

I’m now working in astrophysics, researching in the field of gravitational wave astronomy, and I still teach alongside my research. My time teaching at Western Springs College was really special. I still think fondly of the energy and curiosity of the students, and how the experience shaped me into a better educator.  I am currently working with two ex-springs students who I taught in the WSC physics department.

School life, what it meant to me:
It was a place full of creativity, community, and openness.

Greatest achievement:
Completing my PhD in Physics & Statistics, and still managing to keep a sense of wonder about science.

Greatest influence:
My dad taught me to persevere no matter the challenge. And my mum taught me to be kind.

Source of inspiration:
Young people’s energy reminds me why learning and discovery matter.

Working style:
Collaborative and reflective. I like ideas to be shared, tested, and built together. This is especially important in my field of study.

Taonga:
My cat and my partner who have both been with me through many chapters of life.

Likes:
Nature walks, music, and quiet mornings with coffee and books.

Dislikes:
Needless bureaucracy.

What significant change would you like to see in your lifetime?
It’s a bit corny, but I hope we take better care of our planet and let science and compassion guide our choices.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this week?
I started reading Life Lessons from a Parasite by John Janovy Jr. It’s written in such a personal and informative way that it captivated me from the very beginning.

Thought on life:
It’s short and unpredictable, so kindness and curiosity go a long way.

Parting thought:
Nature doesn’t lie. The laws of the universe are simple, but endlessly beautiful.
