Fantastic news – just in!  Western Springs College Year 12 student Flynn Mullany has been announced as the NZ representative to drive a Formula 4 race car in the FIA motorsport world games in Rome, this coming November.  You can check out the details of this achievement in the companion article below, as well as viewing Flynn on TV 3 with Sean Summerfield on CRC Motorsport next Thursday – October 3rd.

As Flynn makes his debut on the world stage I am reminded that New Zealand icon and motorsport great, Bruce McLaren, is an ex student of Springs (in its Seddon High School days).

….aaaand while I’m on the subject of cars, let me mention the carpark at the front of the school.

Fact: This is an Auckland Zoo carpark – (see photograph below)

Fiction: This is a public carpark.  Incorrect (see above)

Fact: The carpark is constantly full at the moment.

Fiction: Construction workers from Springs project and Zoo project are taking up the available spaces.  Incorrect as Zoo has employed security personnel to monitor this.

Fact: Western Springs College staff have some allocated spaces in this carpark while the school’s new carpark is being built.

Fiction: Students are permitted to park in there as well.

The reason I am highlighting this is because we are continuing to get complaints from zoo management that their volunteers, staff and customers have nowhere to park because of Springs staff and students taking up all available spaces.  Compounding the issue is the disruption of both of our construction projects and the remarking and reformatting of the carpark.  Following on from my emails and alerts I need to emphasise that students must not park in this carpark.  Please park in the street, like many of our staff currently do, or alternatively do not drive at all.  Cycle, bus or walk.

Finally, a message to all of our students.  Enjoy the Term 3 break, make the most of what will hopefully be great Spring weather and come back energised for an important Term 4 – especially if you are sitting external exams.
