As our summer sporting season draws to a close even though our ‘endless summer’ keeps on keeping on, it is timely to report on events and participation stats, as well as reminding all intending players in our winter codes to make sure they have signed up for teams in Te Whakamanu.

This follows on from our incredibly successful Athletics Day where 1214 students entered! Last week, our Sports Coordinators were busy supporting our summer sports teams participating in the NZ Secondary Schools Summer Tournament Week (including driving to Blue Lake in Rotorua to support our Waiōrea Waka Ama paddlers). The weekend before that, our Springs-Waiōrea Dragon Boat Team brought home the Silver medal in the mixed crews grand final on Lake Pupuke!

WSCW Junior cricket pulls off incredible tie – their second this season!

Ties are extremely unusual in cricket, but recently, the junior cricket team got their second tie of the 2024/25 summer. From almost certain defeat against Green Bay, the WSCW Eels dragged themselves back into the game and, with a wicket on the very last ball, they tied the scores at 146 each.

Wonderfully coached and managed by Marcus Clark and Elke Chilwell, the Eels are currently WSCW’s only cricket team. They are playing positive, attractive and fun cricket and sometimes wowing the supporters.

If you’re interested in cricket next summer, or indeed any of the sports on offer at Springs, please contact Sports Director Peter McIntyre.
