BASKETBALL
What a year it’s been for our basketball programme!
We’ve had athletes competing and excelling at some of the highest levels.
A huge congratulations to Cruz Alomajan and Archie Bradford who both represented at the U16 Nationals. Special mention to Archie who played in the Grand Final with his team, what an awesome achievement!
Also congratulations to Daniel Brophy for competing at the U18 National Qualifiers.
Over the term we also had more success at the Te Māhepohepotanga Basketball Tournament. Tui Couch-Graham took out Tournament MVP, with Temahia Fox-Huriwai, Daniel Michael and Cezahn Tipene also making the Tournament Team. Well done boys!
TEAM RESULTS
U19 Premier Boys: Finished 4th
U17 Premier Boys: Finished 3rd
U19 Premier Girls: Narrowly lost a close final to Macleans College, finishing 2nd in Girls Open Grade.
Right now, both our Premier Boys and Premier Girls teams are gearing up and preparing hard for the upcoming Winter Tournaments. We can’t wait to see what they do next!
Let’s keep supporting our teams as they finish the season strong.
A special mention goes out to all our Year 13 students who are playing their last year of basketball with us. They will be missed by the programme and have been outstanding leaders in our space.
Last but not least, thank you to all our student coaches and managers for all the work during the season! None of this would be possible without you.

CLIMBING
Congratulations to Year 9 student Waka Moriya (below left).
Waka gained 3rd place in the Girls’ Year 9 and 10 bracket at the Auckland College Climbing Series. We are proud of Waka’s achievement!
HOCKEY
Congratulations to our 1XI Girls Hockey team on an incredible season, finishing 3rd overall in the finals in their grade. Despite missing a few key players during the final games due to illness and school camp, the girls dug deep and delivered a fantastic result. All those early Tuesday morning training sessions in the freezing cold truly paid off!!!
A massive thank you to our coach, former student Emily Gillbanks and to our parent manager Bindy Murphy for their dedication, guidance and support throughout the season. We also want to give a special shout out and thank you to our student referee Sam Hamilton as well as all the wonderful parent helpers who supported the team along the way.
Fantastic effort, girls!!!

NETBALL
Congratulations to our Director of Netball, Diane (Di) Pakau, on recently being awarded the Netball Waitākere 2026 Representative Coach of the Year! This is one of Netball Waitākere’s Representative Campaign Major Awards for 2026.
Netball Waitākere has said:
“Di has once again demonstrated exceptional leadership, guiding our U18/1 team to back-to-back National Championship titles, an incredible achievement and a testament to her dedication, knowledge, and passion for the game.
Beyond the results, Di is renowned for creating an environment where players feel valued, challenged, and inspired. Her ability to build a strong team culture, foster meaningful connections, and bring out the very best in every athlete has been at the heart of her team’s success. Congratulations, Di, on this well-deserved recognition, and thank you for the outstanding contribution you continue to make to Netball Waitākere.”

WAKA AMA
Congratulations to our NPoW ākonga – including Kanoa MacFie (Y13), Bronze Te Whata (Y11), Kiwa Tomas (Y10) and Taz Whaanga-Aiono (Y11) – who are currently competing in the Singapore IVF Va’a World Sprint Championships 2026 for Waka Ama, which being held in Marina Bay between Monday 17th August and Sunday 30th August.
Results to date include a silver medal for Kanoa MacFie and his team in the J19’s W12 event, to a team made up of two of the best Tahitian clubs (Tahitian Paddle and Mataiea Va’a). This is their second silver medal in the last two World Sprint Champs in this event – which is a fantastic achievement!
We wish all of our NPoW participants the very best for the rest of the campaign!

Our New Zealand Secondary Schools Tournament Week starts this week on Saturday 29th August (with Girls Basketball) and runs through to Friday 4th September. The following codes will be participating & we wish all the teams the best of luck!

Charli Dunn selected for FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026
A huge congratulations to our alumna, Charli Dunn, who was recently selected in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2026 squad, which is set to play in Poland between 5th-27th September!
Charli was one of 21 players selected in this squad. New Zealand has been placed in Group D alongside Japan, Italy and USA.
The scheduled Group D matches are as below:
7 September, 1AM NZT
10 September, 1AM NZT
13 September, 1AM NZTCharli is one of five squad members selected who have come through the USA college soccer programmes; Charli represents Middle Tennessee State University.
We wish Charli the very best in this campaign – Springs-Waiōrea will be cheering for you!!
Gladys Sudyatmiko – Taekwon-Do success
Alumna (left 2025), Gladys Sudyatmiko, continues her success in Taekwon-Do. Last week, Gladys was awarded a Gold medal in sparring and two Bronze medals in pattern and pre-arranged free sparring at the ITF Taekwon-Do New Zealand National Championship in Hamilton (22 + 23 August).
This followed her success at the Perak International Taekwon-Do Championship in Malaysia on 24 July 2026 involving 14 countries and over 2000 competitors. At this tournament, Gladys was awarded two Gold medals in sparring and pre-arranged free sparring, and two Bronze medals in pattern and Open Prime League sparring. Furthermore, Gladys was also awarded the Best Female Athlete colour belt.
