Over the school holidays, we had the amazing opportunity to attend the Rangatahi Environmental Action Leaders (REAL) programme, a three day experience held at Ōtara marae, Ambury Regional Park, and Manukau Institute of Technology. We learned so much about climate action, politics, leadership, and how we can make a positive impact on our communities. It was an inspiring chance to connect with like minded students from across Tāmaki Makaurau, guided by Auckland Council’s Sustainable Schools team.

We are so grateful to have learned from such knowledgeable, passionate people including past Western Springs College students, and others who have been involved with our school. Hearing their stories and seeing the incredible work they are doing in sustainability was both eye opening and motivating.

REAL is all about empowering young people to lead sustainability initiatives while deepening their understanding of Mātauranga Māori, Te Tiriti, and caring for te taiao. As part of the programme, we are now working on an action project, and have chosen to create a documentary to inspire other young people to take action for the environment.

If you are passionate about sustainability, we would really recommend applying for the REAL programme next year. It is a year long journey filled with workshops, action days, and opportunities to develop your leadership skills.
