The WSC Senior Girls’ Water Polo team qualified for the 2021 Premier Grade in February with a convincing win in a promotion/relegation game over Kristin Premier Girls’ 12 – 4.Since 2016 WSC Girls’ Water Polo has been working hard to progress through College Sport and NZ Water Polo grades. Scott James joined in 2018 to coach the Junior Girls and has continued with them into Seniors. This team is the first WSC Girls’ Water Polo team to reach the premier grade.
Six games into the current season the girls are sitting in the middle of the points table on equal points with four other schools and just behind Rangitoto and Diocesan. The girls started off by playing Carmel College, which was a very tough game, but came out with a 5-3 win. In the second game, they went up against St Kentigern’s College. This game was hard for the girls and they game out with a 13-8 loss. The week after, the girls had to prepare themselves for three more tough games. The first game was full of lots of back and forth as they were playing Baradene College. This team has been a tough competitor for Springs water polo for a couple of years now, but we were able to come through with a 7-4 win. On Sunday it was the inevitable doubleheader versus both St Cuthbert’s College and Diocesan School for Girls, on the same day only hours apart. The game against St Cuths was a very unfortunate 8-4 loss. The Diocesan game was used as a learning curve for the team as they knew this would be a hard game They game out fighting and lost 12-3, but it was actually 13-3 because they don’t count the own goals!. On the Friday just gone the girls played Westlake Girls. Like Baradene this has always been a tough one but they were able to come away with a 6-4 win. On Sunday the girls played Rangitoto Prems and unfortunately lost 7-1. They are now placed 5th on the table.
Coming up in the next couple of weekends the girls will play again as this will determine who they play in the semis. With the girls’ form at the moment our main goal is to stay out of promotion relegations for next year. Hopefully they can pull through with a win. Wish the team luck 🙂
The team has gone to Wellington for their North Island champs and are very excited that they are able to go, thanks to Pete and Sami.
In the coming holidays the girls are also entered to participate in the 2021 premier Nationals in Auckland, which will be full of very tough games. This is the second time ever for a WSCW Water Polio team to participate in the premier nationals and is the highest level that can be achieved in a secondary schools’ water competition. This is a huge achievement.
