In week two of the term the year 13 Drama class presented The Witches’ Macbeth with two casts, each with 25 witches who never left the stage. In our version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the witches truly ruled. The conceit of the production lay in the Witches, not only tempting Macbeth and Lady Macbeth to murder King Duncan, but in the process, playing every other character, slipping in and out of roles to plague, entice and torment Macbeth and his wife, and ultimately revelling in their demise.
I feel privileged to have taught most of these students for the past five years, meeting many for the first time online in 2021. We have grown together and have a bond I am fiercely proud of. These students epitomise the qualities of caring and kindness. Their sense of manaakitanga is their strength as a class and therefore as a cast. This adaption could have only worked with a cast sharing these qualities. They created a stunning piece of theatre that enthralled the audiences and showed what young actors are truly capable of. Working with these young people has been a absolute highlight in my teaching career.
