Tēnā koutou katoa

It has been another busy term in the all Arts areas of Western Springs College Ngā Puna O Waiōrea. I would like to take this moment to aknowledge the time, energy and aroha our Arts ākonga and kaiako have given to their work this term. There have been many hours spent exploring, rehearsing and refining in each of these Art spaces.

But wait we are not finished yet! To celebrate the end of Semester One our Arts Department are going on tour. We are pleased to be able to head back to Ponsonby Intermediate and Pasadena Intermeidate in week 9 to present a collection of work from visual art, media, music, drama and dance.

Arts Committee – Do you want to support the Arts at WSCNPoW? It’s not too late to join our 2021 team. We meet every Thursday lunchtime in Whare Puoro. Our 2021 Arts Leaders are Te Kapua Te Maapi Pene, Isobele Christie and Rafael Hosking.

Thanks to Nina G Photography for the ArtsNews Heading photograph.

Congratulations Year 12 Dance students on an excellent performance at YouDance Festival on Tuesday 22 June at the Raye Freedman Theatre!!

YouDance is a celebration of excellent choreography and performance and an opportunity for secondary school students to see the work produced by students in other schools.

The Year 12 Dance students performed their own NCEA choreography inspired by ideas of cause and effect, ripples caused by a drop of water, and bubbling jacuzzis! They also performed the stunning dance Wind and Sails that they choreographed with their teacher Sam Wood Rawnsley and a guest tutor, Anitra Hayday. Look out for the professional photos in the next newsletter.

Dance Trip to see Atamira Dance Company’s Te Wheke

Dance students from Years 10-13 enjoyed their first trip to the theatre this year to see Atamira Dance Company’s 21st anniversary work Te Wheke.

The contemporary Māori dance company showcased collaborations between individual dancers and experienced practitioners, and was inspired by the 8 tentacles of the octopus representing eight themes of Maori world view: Tinana – the body, Wairua – the spirit, Hinengaro – the mind, Whatumanawa – the emotions, Mana Ake – the authority, Mauri – the lifeforce, Whānau – the family, Tupuna – the ancestral.

Our students enjoyed the vivid projections, use of props such as red silk, a huge spinning rope, curtains that suddenly revealed dancers, and a glowing moon-like ball, as well as the solo dance with metal track by Alien Weaponry. Some students were particularly drawn to single moments in the dance, such as a towering shape of connected dancers, a quiet loving waltz at the start, and the wandering of a man with the moon-like lamp.

It’s showtime for the Drama department. Commissioned by The National Theatre (UK), Zero for the Young Dudes! is Alistair McDowall’s call to arms for the disenfranchised Gen Z. Set against a dystopian background, inmates of a bizarre summer camp are plotting a revolution. Beneath the schedule of cross country runs, lessons and meals, a long history of unrest and injustice lies hidden. As we watch the young inmates’ plan unfold, a violent future looms large out of a violent past.

Date:    Wednesday 30th June and Thursday 1st July

Time:    4pm and again at 6pm

Where: TAPAC Theatre

Art News!

Extended Winter Greetings

Despite the changeable weather – the students are continuing to extend and challenge themselves in the Visual Arts.  Both Junior and Senior students are working hard to complete work for assessment before the end of this term.  The term two Y9 students are busy producing paintings that combine pattern and creatures, the Y10 semester one students are finishing work for NCEA Level 1 credits. Y11 are working on their second Internal for the year – creating innovative collagraph prints and paintings that will support their development on the external boards, and Y12 and Y13 students are navigating their way through various internals to produce works that are framed and extended by their independent programmes.

Y10 Semester I Illustrative Pop Portraits exhibited at recent Junior Whānau/Student Interviews

At the time of writing TIC Art Design Kirsty Britton-Taylor has organised a senior trip for the Y13 Art Design, Painting and Photography students to view a range of Art in context (Pah Homestead) and also evaluate and discuss the NZQA Top Art Portfolio Exhibition (currently at Te Tuhi Gallery in  Pakuranga).  This travelling exhibition of top folios features two former Art Design students Jamie Heathcote and Stella Fogorelli. Due to COVID we missed a number of EOTC opportunities last year, however we are still hopeful that we are eligible for the Semi Permanent Design convention later in the year.

Thanks to TIC Art Photography Danielle Teleiai for setting up the darkroom – the luxury of having one is a real asset to our department and will provide the opportunity for select seniors and juniors to utilise wet photographic processes.

As its half way through the year – a gentle reminder that there are still a number of Art fees that have yet to be paid. Thank you to those families who have paid – your contribution enables us to manage and develop our programmes to meet the needs of the students moving forward into the Creative Communities.

Last, but not least – we would like to congratulate the following students who have been awarded the prestigious 2021 Pat Hanly Creativity Awards – Y13 Isabelle Adamson for her Illustrative Design ‘Huntsman’ and Oscar Maltby for Photography ‘Guilt’. Isabelle and Oscar will receive their awards this Thursday 24th at Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Art Gallery.

As a school we have had a number of outstanding Arts students chosen for this award – but never two in one year…
