Geography teacher Sarah Carr would like to thank her colleagues and the leadership of Springs – Waiōrea for allowing her to take leave in order to complete a Postgraduate Diploma of Geospatial Science last year.
Sarah was able to use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to undertake wide-ranging research. Topics included the use of satellite data to assess… the potential habitat for the critically endangered tara iti / New Zealand fairy tern, the glacier retreat on Mt Ruapehu, suitable sites for a proposed housing development in Wānaka and cycle and pedestrian accidents. Sarah’s research on locations where cyclists and pedestrians are hit by cars has been recently presented at the ESRI regional conference. She hopes it will lead to positive change.
