Kia ora koutou katoa
The last few weeks have been very challenging times for us all and we do hope that everyone is well both mentally and physically. This letter is information for both students and parents to give you steps that have been taken so far, and an update of what sports will look like moving forward. The WSC Sports Department have been in communication with our Regional Sports Director and College Sport Auckland who provide competitions for our students, coaches and management to do what they love including extra curricular sports.
WSC Sports: Where we are now
Our Sports Department have already taken a majority of our winter sport code team sign ups which started in week five of term one, and putting the tentative expressions to play winter sport 2020 into a database which we will be sending out with further information. Some of our bigger sports codes have already had trials or musters. We do have enough information to enter teams to ensure our students do not miss out on participating in winter sports for 2020 in all our sports codes.
At this stage we are in a holding phase of sport and physical activity, ensuring we stay within the guidelines from the Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Health (MOH), the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council (NZSSSC), Sport NZ and College Sport Auckland (CSA) who are all developing a consistent plan and message over the upcoming weeks.
In conjunction with our principal Ivan Davis, depending on what the guidelines are which will be released for each level of the Covid-19, we do have an internet planned approach and are aware that changes and adjustments will need to be made once the guidelines have been confirmed for sport and sport activities.
Internal school sports:
WSC Sports Department facilitates in-school sports e.g. house competitions, form level competitions, indoor sports code tournaments, school athletics and swimming sports.
College Sport Auckland Competitions:
Our inter school competitions are sanctioned and facilitated by College Sport Auckland. WSC Sports Department carry out sport sign ups for up to 30 different sporting codes in these competitions.
New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council, Regional and National Tournaments:
WSC Sports Department enter team/s, individual registrations and all the aspects of supporting the team up to and throughout the competitions.
Key points to remember:
- WSC team sign ups – if you feel you may have missed out please email the T.I.C/person in charge listed below
College Sport Auckland winter 2020:
- We have received student information to put in sports team registrations for the 2020 winter programmes if and when it commences
New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council, Regional and National competitions:
- WSC Sports Department has put in some initial registrations for teams that have already qualified. The national bodies and NZSSSC have sent out information that there will be some reformatting of any tournaments if they are to go ahead. All decisions will coincide with the level of Covid-19 and the resources available.
- WSC Sports Department has a draft plan with student wellbeing being the main focus. We will be ensuring, with the support of our principal Ivan Davis, that our students do not miss out on any opportunities that are available. We will also have an internal programme so the basic enjoyment of physical activity can be started alongside the changing Covid-19 levels.
