The use of AI in education is a focus for many schools currently. At WSCW we have both policy and guidelines for teachers/kaiako and students/ākonga. We have a responsibility to ensure that our students/ākonga are well prepared to use AI responsibly and safely and that they are aware of the uses and limitations of AI. Students/ākonga are encouraged and supported to critically assess AI-generated information ensuring they verify facts, can identify bias and understand the context of the content generated.
We will communicate regularly with whānau and family about how we are using this digital tool in our school/kura, and how we are educating our students/ākonga about safe and responsible use.
Our student/ākonga AI guidelines and our AI traffic light system explain to the students/ākonga the extent to which they may use Generative AI tools when completing assessments and/&or class tasks. Teachers/Kaiako choose whether AI is appropriate for use and task sheets include the traffic light icon appropriate to the task. Students must use the Gemini Google Workplace app unless the teacher has specified a different tool. You can learn more about Gemini in Google’s Guardian’s Guide to AI.
Our student/ākonga guidelines can be viewed here and the AI traffic light system is below.
Students/ākonga learn about the guidelines and traffic lights in their subject classes & during whānau classes where they are completing activities and quizzes, in order to increase understanding of the system and clarify questions and misunderstandings.
Using AI when not permitted is plagiarism and will result in consequences, so we encourage students/ākonga to talk to their teachers/kaiako if they have questions or are unclear about the conditions of any assessment or classroom task.
