Course and Credits
At Level 1 and Level 2, apart from a few special programmes, courses offer between 18 and 22 credits. There is more flexibility at Level 3. In exceptional circumstances some students may be withdrawn from some credits in a course or have the opportunity to take extra credits. At Level 3, to help ensure students gain UE, extra credits may be offered.
Some subjects offer students the chance to take some Level 1 standards in Year 10, although these will not be credited until Year 11. These are noted in separate chart in the course book entries for these subjects.

Course Title: Level 1 Dance
Course Description:
- Students learn dance technique and performance skills in two different genres of breakdance and contemporary dance.
- Students develop choreography skills through the making of pair and group dances based on Kowhaiwhai Patterns and Making Connections.
- Students study the origins of breakdance and investigate the influence of the socio-economic background on features of the dance style.

Course Description:
History is both knowledge based and skill based. Important writing and analytical skills are the focus for history students, beginning in Year 11 and continuing through to Year 13.
The course covers major events of the 20 th century and their connection to this country.
Students who complete this course will have a very good overview of the most significant causes and consequences of World War Two
- What were the causes of World War Two? The Treaty of Versailles, the League of Nations, Hitler’s actions and the failed policy of appeasement

Course Title: Level 1 Philosophy
Course Description:
- The course seeks to introduce students to a range of philosophical concepts, themes and thinkers, as well as developing students’ philosophical skills and their ability to make connections across traditional subject boundaries.
- The main aims of the course are to stimulate a love of learning and inquiry, and to develop a capacity to question – although success will be acknowledged through NCEA credits.

E toru ngā kaupapa nui o 11 Pūtaiao ara ko, Koiora, Matauranga Matu me Ahupungāo.
- With a focus on learning Science through Te Reo, the Level 1 Science course is intended for students of the Rumaki who have the Te Reo skills to operate bilingually.

Course Title: Level 1 Design and Visual Communication (Graphics)
Course Description:
Design and Visual Communication is the study of product and architectural design. Students learn how to produce and develop ideas and solutions using a variety of visual communication methods. Students become able to evaluate a target market place and understand the needs of the consumers within it.
In this subject, students develop skills in drawing, rendering, modeling and I.T.C. using everything from pencils and pens through to markers, and programmes such as Photoshop, sketch-up 3D, Sketchup layout, floor planner and illustrator.
The course focuses on the following:
- Product design: the design of a three dimensional objects such as iPod speakers, headphones, torches, etc
- Architecture: the design of the interior and the exterior of domestic and commercial buildings, spatial design, landscaping.
- Idea Presentation: the ability to find the most appropriate method of showcasing ideas to a specific audience – this may be using website, presentation boards, posters,models.
These areas are studied further at University level and lead to clearly defined career paths. Design and Visual Communication is the opening to a range of some of the most exciting and dynamic careers available.

The fashion industry is a dynamic and ever evolving area that employs a large amount of creative thinking people in New Zealand and the rest of the world. The Textiles Technology course is designed to give students an introduction to this industry and gives the opportunity to learn a wide.
range of skills ranging from design and conceptualisation, to the stages of garment construction and applying pattern to textiles. Some standards at Levels 2 and 3 allow students to study and gain an understanding of business models and practice.
The Level 1 course covers three strands of study:
- Basic skills and processes used in creating a screen printed tote bag
- Designing and modelling a concept “Ready for School – Alternative uniform for WSC.”
- Developing a design brief in creating a prototype outfit.

Course Title: Food and Nutrition Level 1
Course Description:
The Food Technology Industry is one of New Zealand’s biggest employers.This course is designed to give students a broad vision of all aspects of the food industry ranging from hospitality to nutrition.
Course Structure
- Students will gain life skills that can equip them to choose, prepare and cook a wide range of nutritious food.
- Students will be awarded a health and Safety food hygiene certificate
- Students will also be expected to participate in a live catering event.

Course Title: Level 1 Hard Materials
Course Description:
Hard Technology is the study of designing products for specific situations and their influence on contemporary society. Students learn about materials, techniques and processes used in the design industry through a balance of practical projects focussed on students’ interests, and theory based projects to deepen student knowledge and understanding.
In this subject students develop skills in ideation, woodwork and joinery, laser cutting, plastic forming, drawing, modelling, graphic application and I.T.C programmes such as Sketch-up 3D, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
The course focusses on the following:
- ALL aspects of Technological Practice including research, concept generation and evaluation of practice.
- Workshop practices AND CNC/Digital design and manufacturing
- An entirely Achievement Standards based course

Course Title: Level 1 Te Reo Māori
Course Description:
Emphasis is on the development of writing and speaking skills within traditional and contemporary contexts. Internal Assessments take place throughout the year. External Assessments will be practised in mid-year and preliminary examinations. Māori Performing Arts credits will be available to those that have participated in the school kapa haka competitions this year.
