As our summer sporting season draws to a close even though our ‘endless summer’ keeps…

There have been a number of sporting achievements for our Springs-Waiōrea sports teams recently – check them out below!
Archery
In early March, the North Island Youth Archery Champs were held in a very windy Wellington! The Schaffer brothers (Jacob – Y12 and Toby – Y13) participated in this competition and they did very well.
Although the entire field scored lower than usual due to the high winds, Jacob and Toby still ranked as the top two barebow archers and both won Gold! Jacob for U21 and Toby for U18.
There were two matchplay events (team and individual). The teams were randomly selected and the boys both shot in the senior division. The boys shot against each other in both matchplays, taking the Gold and Silver! Toby managed to take points of Jacob in both finals, which was fantastic.
Athletics
Recently the Su brothers (Daequan – Y12 & Benaiah – Y13) competed at the 2025 Jennian Homes New Zealand Track and Field Championships in Dunedin (6-8 March), which is the pinnacle of track and field competition in New Zealand.
Both boys competed in the Under 18 age group. Benaiah won a Bronze medal in Discus with a throw of 42.53 metres; 6th in Long jump at 6.12 metres; and 13th in the 200 metre in 23.79 secs.
Daequan was 5th in triple jump; he jumped 12.32 metres and was the youngest in the field at only 15. Daequan also placed fourth in the 110 metres Hurdles with 15.12, missing out on the Bronze medal by 0.08 secs. Despite Covid a couple of weeks earlier affecting his recovery, preparation and energy levels, Daequan was seeded third in Triple (season best is 12.7) & Second in 110 m Hurdles (season best is 14.85) – which was still a fantastic achievement! This is a first for WSCW where we have had an athlete receive a medal in the Senior Boys Long Jump, Intermediate Boys Long Jump, Senior Boys 110m Hurdles and in the Intermediate Boys Triple Jump!
Both Benaiah & Daequan are planning to attend the North Island Secondary Schools’ Track & Field Championships in Hamilton on 5th, 6th April – best of luck to you both!
Cricket
WSCW Junior cricket pulls off incredible tie – their second this season!
Ties are extremely unusual in cricket, but last Saturday the junior cricket team got their second tie of the 2024/25 summer. From almost certain defeat against Green Bay, the WSCW Eels dragged themselves back into the game and, with a wicket on the very last ball, they tied the scores at 146 each.
Wonderfully coached and managed by Marcus Clark and Elke Chilwell, the Eels are currently WSCW’s only cricket team. They are playing positive, attractive and fun cricket and sometimes wowing the supporters.
If you’re interested in cricket next summer, or indeed any of the sports on offer at Springs, please contact Sports Director Peter McIntyre (email mcintyrep@wsc.school.nz).
Dragon Boating
The 2025 Auckland Secondary Schools Dragon Boating Championships, hosted by the Auckland Dragon Boat Association (ADBA), was held at Lake Pupuke in Takapuna on Saturday, March 22nd. Our WSCW Dragon Boat Team brought home the Silver Medal in the mixed crews grand final!
The team is open primarily to Year 13 students (total of 24 required in the dragon boat) and is coached by our Principal Ivan Davis and the Manager is our WSC Director of Sport, Peter McIntyre.
