Chloe Swarbrick’s visit to Springs this week to meet with our Year 13 students has…

Over the last few weeks our Outdoor Education classes have been contributing to Kaitiakitanga projects around the school. Year 11, 12 and 13 classes have been weeding and planting down beside the Waītītīko awa, which borders the school grounds. The students planted approximately 200 grasses along the bank to help with erosion and to slow flood waters. Thanks to Damien Hannah from Healthy Waters who provided the plants and assisted with the restorative planting.
The students have also been working at the Pā harakeke learning about the harakeke as well as weeding and mulching the area. Work has also gone into mulching the new native planting on the northern field. Through giving back to the whenua, our students are learning the reciprocal connection we have with the environment, summarised in the following whakataukī: “Ka ora te whenua, Ka ora te tangata” – If the land is well, the people will be well.
Ka rawe to all the students and staff involved! We think it is awesome that you are caring for the environment you engage in.
