A few Wednesdays ago, on the 21st of August, Western Springs College had three incredible team representatives compete in the once-a-year
Mathex competition. Mathex is an annual celebration of students’ love for mathematics, demonstrated through a quick and pressure-based battle between schools from years seven to ten; our school had two year nine teams, and one year ten team, all three of which had spent countless of hours in lessons and even during their own lunchtimes dedicated to preparing for the upcoming contest. After months of preparation, our mathematicians, alongside Springs’ math department and two year thirteen and year twelve student coaches, set off to Kohimarama to participate inside the Barfoot & Thompson Stadium against a wave of local schools. While Western Springs College failed to break into the top three in either year level, the loss was by all means a close one.
A good job and congratulations is owed to our amazing year nine and ten teams for their months-long dedication to preparing for this event, as well as the honorable effort made during. Puffy and red-faced from concentration, excitement, and a bit of physical exertion from our teams’ runners, the Springs teams left Mathex knowing they’d just accomplished an immense feat, participating in such a fierce competition all while having smiles on their faces, regardless of the outcome.
