On Tuesday 15th of June to Wednesday 16th, the senior girls’ squash team attended the Auckland Champs competition. We went into the event for the experience that comes with it. After winning our first game against Westlake Girls we realised that our chances of placing highly were more possible than we expected. We had a trip to McDonalds in-between games where the food and a play on the playground regenerated us enough for us to win our next game against Mt Albert Girls. This left us on a high, ready to do well for the following day.
The second day we played Avondale first up and we ended up winning against them as well. This set us up well for winning the tournament. We needed to win against Macleans Girls to take out the competition. As Macleans had also been undefeated so far this would be our hardest competition. Who wins would determine the winner of the competition. It was a very tight game against Macleans with lots of supporters watching. But Macleans came out on top with four out of five of their members winning against us. This put us in second place.
All the girls in the team put in such a massive effort. It was the first Auckland Champs tournament that many of them had been to and was the most successful one we have had in a while, coming in second place overall. Annabel put in a massive effort for her first year of squash filling our fifth place in the team. Sarah took our fourth place spot and didn’t let the team down. Her racket (Bluebell) helped her during each game and allowed her to win a few games. Tess stepped up as our number one player because of grading difficulties, she did us proud and took the win for several of her games despite being our usual number 3 player. Sofiaalso did us proud by winning four out of five of her games and proving that she is one of our top players despite being year ten. I, (Trelise), ended up winning all of my games with an unfair advantage that I should have been playing as number one. Although this change was made, we still did our best and everyone put a massive effort into the tournament. Richard was our number one cheerleader on the side giving us feedback and helping us win our games.
Shoutout to Sofia who even attended the tournament on her birthday which we celebrated with a birthday cake at the end of the tournament. We ended up on a high doing better than anyone had expected. Well done to all the girls for their effort, next we will be going to win our weekly grade games.
